When I started my career at a patient education publishing company, I learned the art of writing for those facing the stress and anxiety of a new diagnosis or procedure. This included:
- empathizing with my audience
- using a simple format with plenty of subheads, bullets and white space
- writing at the 5th to 6th grade reading level (not so simple!)
I’ve written pamphlets, booklets, newsletters, articles and online content on everything from cancer and heart disease to plantar warts and COVID-19. My intention is always to help people better understand, manage and cope with their conditions.
